FIRST PORT

FIRST PORT is a CAPSULE PROJECTS initiative motivated by the desire to foster dialogue in the international field of fashion and culture. The special guest at the event is JERRY BOUTHIER, the music director for Vivienne Westwood and Matthew Williamson and DJ for forward-thinking French music and fashion label, Kitsuné (the home of acts like Digitalism and Two Door Cinema Club). He was a resident DJ at BoomBox, the seminal London party that once welcomed Björk to the decks. Photography Nico Krijno.

Rock Me Again No 5. Johannesburg

Nestling in a corner just off center court at Hyde Park Corner, Johannesburg, is the spanking new boutique-style vida store that hosted the 5th annual Rock Me Again exhibition of fashion portraits. Not just any fashion. These portraits are the culmination of a near three-month long campaign of old-garment collection, upcycling and image-creation, bringing awareness to environmental challenges faced by our planet. The event was a sublime moment of meeting-and-greeting with some of Joburg’s most forward-thinking fashion designers, artists and culture followers in attendance. Next stop Cape Town. Stay informed about this travelling exhibition.

CONNECTED JOBURGBERLIN

Design by Daniel Ting Chong

Is there a “Joburg Look”? Is there a “Berlin Look”?

Capsule Projects, nicely settled in the field of visual culture for independent fashion, collaborates with STR.CRD, a committed exponent of South African street style and culture, on a project specifically designed to examine the distinctive styles of Joburg and Berlin. Entitled CONNECTED JOBURG x BERLIN, the project harnesses the creative talents of stylists in Johannesburg (Thithi Nteta, Khaya Sibiya of Punk and Ivy) and Berlin (Joey Elgersma, Mayra Fateh, Lee Stuart from Bread and Butter Berlin) to represent the cultural hubs of Africa and Europe respectively.

CONNECTED JOBURG x BERLIN proposes that there is a distinctive Joburg style and a distinctive Berlin style. As much as people are exposed to an endless stream of fashion images from every corner of the world via the internet, they are still inspired by their immediate surroundings. Social and economic circumstances, subcultures, heritage and independent homegrown fashion labels all play a part in influencing the way people dress and giving the city a fashion sense of its own. The stylists have been invited to examine the cultural characteristics and style codes that define the current “Joburg Look” and “Berlin Look”. Is the metropolitan style defined by a particular group? Is it a style that stands out? As much a cultural as an aesthetic exercise, the project aims to convey a picture of how these cities engage with fashion and in the process distinguish themselves from other cities in the world.

Capsule Projects and bright spark of the South African art scene Rodan Kane Hart have designed an installation for this style and culture investigation on THURSDAY, 27 SEPTEMBER 2012, starting from 20H00 at REVOLUTION HOUSE, KRUGER STREET, MABONENG PRECINCT. Dirty Paraffin Radio and Skelemton will be dropping the tunes.

Who’s shooting who? Rock Me Again No 5 contributing photographers Kope | Figgins (Jonathan Kope and Jarred Figgins) shoot their agent Bruno Zolezzi of Infidels, who then turns the lens on his photographers. Infidels has been in the game of representing photographers, stylists, hair and make-up artists worldwide since 1996. Capsule Projects is thrilled to have the agency on board for the 5th annual Rock Me Again sustainable fashion initiative currently underway.
